Buying advice

How to choose a promotional products supplier for your brand

Promotional products only work if people keep and use them. These are the questions worth settling before you ask any supplier of promotional products for a quote.

Decide what the merchandise is for

Branded items do different jobs. A low-cost giveaway such as promotional pens or keyrings suits a busy exhibition stand, while corporate gifts and branded business gifts thank clients and keep your brand visible long after a meeting. Staff welcome packs and promotional gifts for events sit in between. Start with the job, then choose the product.

Match the product to the decoration

Each brand needs the right branding techniques. Screen printing suits large runs of branded clothing, embroidery lasts on workwear, pad printing fits small items and laser engraving gives a permanent finish on metal. Ask how your name and logo will be applied, and whether you can personalise items with names.

Check quantities, lead times and delivery

Minimum orders range from a single custom printed item to several thousand units, so compare them against your budget before you shortlist. Check the lead time from artwork approval, whether decoration happens in-house, and the cost of UK delivery to more than one address.

Ask for the artwork and proof process

Send your company logo as a vector file with Pantone references and ask for a proof before production. A clear brief about quantities, sizes and delivery dates keeps a marketing campaign on schedule and stops surprises when the branded products arrive.

Look for evidence behind eco claims

Many suppliers now sell eco-friendly products and sustainable branded merchandise, but the strength of each claim varies. Ask what the material is, where the item is made, whether it is UK made, and which certificate or test supports the claim before you repeat it for your brand.

Know the popular product types

The most ordered items are branded mugs, branded water bottles, branded umbrellas, notebooks, stationery, tote bags and printed power banks, alongside drinkware and clothing. A useful item that suits your audience will raise brand awareness far more than a novelty that is thrown away.

How we check listings

Free and paid listings are checked the same way. Being listed is not an endorsement, and corrections or removal never cost anything.

1

Checked at source

We confirm each supplier on its own website: what it sells, where it is based and how to order. The page we used is linked on the listing.

2

Dated

Every listing shows the date we last checked it. We re-check unclaimed listings every six months and claimed ones every year.

3

Open to correction

Businesses can claim their listing free. Anyone can report a change or ask for removal.
